Bereavement Blessings

The following blessings were both created in immediate response to hearing sad news from friends.

The first was written for the family of someone who had been suffering for quite some time. So although it was sad news that they had departed, it was shot through with an element of relief that they are no longer suffering.

The second wasn’t written as a bereavement verse. It was actually written for the daughter of a friend, a veterinary nurse who had been severely bitten in the face by a dog that was being treated. The wound required a lot of stitches and narrowly missed one eye. It was a huge shock for her and her entire family. Whilst they were waiting at the hospital myself and other friends were gathering in to hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

The words here have been slightly modified from my originals and could be adapted further to support other situations. You are welcome to take them and use them as you chose and, in the interests of sharing, I would be grateful if you reference where they came from.

For Philip:

May all the love you know be present in this moment.
May this transition be a place of beauty and grace.

May the light within you behold all that you shared.
And your parting become a place of soulful release.

May all those who surround you honour
this moment with you.

And may the presence of this divinity
remain in your heart for evermore.

For Lauren:

With you we stand at heaven’s door
To call on love for one and all.
May you find deep peace within
And may your healing now begin.

With quiet grace, we’re by your side
When feelings deep you cannot hide.
With open heart please hear this call
We’re holding you, you will not fall.

Together now we resonate
Whilst knocking here at heaven’s gate.
Breathe in this love, then breathe it out
That’s what this journey’s all about.
