Prayer Is…

Last night, in my Interfaith training group we were asked to reflect on Prayer. What it means for us, when is it appropriate and in which occasions may it be inappropriate. I find it an interesting question and it certainly raised some interesting responses. The other question it raises is who are we praying too, and what are we asking. In this era of diversity there is much to consider.

The way I see it at the moment is that prayer is a deeply personal connection to whatever divine presence we believe in. So certainly there are times when offering to pray for someone may not be appropriate, particularly in wishing to honour their journey and respect their beliefs. The ‘who’ in these instances may become a matter of ‘why’ which requires attunement to a deeper sense of sacred connection with each other, and with our personal and shared experiences of divine presence.

With all this in mind, prayer can breathe into new possibilities that offer a unifying experience of love, honour and respect.

Prayer is…

Holding your hand in the dark.
Being your soul friend in times of need.

Prayer is…

Asking for wisdom, for strength,
For insight in moments of doubt.

Prayer is…

Hearing your fears, knowing your grief,
Feeling your joy and honouring those
Pivotal moments of transformation.

Prayer is…

Seeing your divinity and knowing my own.
It is feeling the beauty, and witnessing
the Divine in all living beings.

Prayer is…

Living and loving and growing together
Through all the times of our life.

Prayer is…

Knowing we are one,
And that together we are stronger.
